If this is your first time here, then welcome.  But for those of you that know the gist of this intro, skip down and add your comments.  Every week I run down the weekly match-ups of all the matches on the slate and rank them based on price, ownership, and matches.  I then coagulate those in a high powered juice-maker of FPL proportions and come up with rankings for the week.  Sounds pretty cut and dry, and with this being Week 1, it becomes harder to rank because we only know what we know. And don’t know what we know, besides knowing what we don’t know.  There is no pattern, and it is all speculation.  So this separates the guessers from the experts in some form.  So feel free to critique, give me guff, or just stop on in to pat me on the back.  The season is here, and here starts the first rankings of Week 1.  Cheers!

It’s also not to late to join and compete against me and others in FPL’s season long game,  of course you do its a rhetorical question.  Join the Razzball FPL league  188358-66431 and join me and your fellow Razzballians.

  1. Thibaut Courtois, Chelsea
  2. Ederson, Man City
  3. Hugo Lloris, Spurs
  4. Jordan Pickford, Everton
  5. Simon Mignolet, Liverpool
  6. Fraser Forster, Southampton
  7. Wayne Hennessey, Crystal Palace
  8. David de Gea, Man United
  9. Petr Cech, Arsenal
  10. Asmir Begovic, Bournemouth
  11. Ben Foster, West Brom
  • Courtois gets the nod despite the leaky Chelsea defence during the preseason.  Burnley has trouble scoring goals, especially on the road.
  • If it was a daily selection process, I would roll with Mignolet this week.  No Deeney and Watford has a questionable build-up that shouldn’t worry the CS chase.
  • I’ll pass on Cech for this week, he has more valuable offensive weapons defensively in front of him rather then more of a defensive cohesive unit.

  7. Gary Cahill, Chelsea
  8. Eric Bailly, Man United
  9. Cesar Azpilicueta, Chelsea

  15. Michael Keane, Everton
  16. Jack Stephens, Southampton
  17. Antonio Valencia, Man United
  18. Joel Matip, Liverpool
  19. Hector Bellerin, Arsenal
  20. Victor Lindelof, Man United

  24. Patrick van Aanholt, Crystal Palace
  25. Andrew Robertson, Liverpool
  26. Nathan Ake, Bournemouth
  27. Craig Dawson, West Brom
  28. Martin Olsson, Swansea
  29. Adam Smith, Bournemouth
  30. Gareth McAuley, West Brom
  • Defense is all about the clean sheet chase.  Yeah, goals and assists are great when you don’t have to chase them and are a given… which they really aren’t ever for defenders.
  • Chelsea, Spurs and City have the priciest defenders in the game and it correlates to game Week 1.  All or most of their defenders are listed.
  • Throw sleepers out the window to play in week one and go with affordable chalk if possible.  Splurge for 1-2 defenders above 5.5 and then fill in with good/great match-up defenders on lower level clubs.
  • PUNT a defender.  there is zero chance that your 5th defender is more valuable the your punted midfielder.

Hey Smokey, doing my first ever FPL draft tonight. Do you post season/draft rankings anywhere? I couldn’t find any. Thanks!

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:

@Matty: Havent’t touched on teh official game draft at all. Not really a fan,as I play with Togga. More advanced scoring and such. Plenty of rankings aropund though and theirs aren’t too shabby either.

  2. Matty says:

Yeah I’m playing on Togga too. Any specific rankings you’d recommend for a newbie, or do you think the default Togga rankings are good enough? Thanks

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:

@Matty: Defaults are ok just with the official game covet goals and assists more. The point totals on Togga and rankings reflect secondary and some tertiary attributes.
